The mystery woman's injuries were many she was found dismembered with multiple wounds.
Her fingerprints had degraded from being the water. For years the discovery raised questions for Boca Raton police: Who was this woman in the water? Why did someone kill her? How did she die? Investigators said they've identified the woman as Melissa Cooper, solving one piece of the puzzle thanks to better technology. But they still don't know who killed her. Now they're asking the public to help with the investigation. Police revealed Friday that Cooper was 31 at the time of her death.
Records show she lived for a period of time in West Palm Beach, but originally hailed from Michigan Police spokeswoman Sandra Boonenberg said technological advances helped them get a better read on her fingerprints. Then, in 2013, the Police Department upgraded its system.
Unlike the old method, Boonenberg said the new fingerprint reader enhances the print and fills in the gaps to help determine to whom the print might belong. Once the "smart prints" are made, a trained fingerprint examiner will either confirm or reject the print possibilities. The process is long and tedious, Boonenberg said. In October of that year, the mystery woman's prints were run again. This time there was a match.
"When police got the match, they had a bunch of leads, so they did some detective work," Boonenberg said. "They traveled out of state and talked to people who knew her. They wanted to get some investigating done." Records show Cooper had a troubled past as she had multiple prostitution convictions in Palm Beach County. Her last citation came just in March 1993, a few months before she was found. She wasn't convicted, however, because she never appeared in court.
Boonenberg said detectives have spoken to Cooper's family and have notified them of her death.
